Hub with Holes – Uses Wheel Bolts
If you see metal studs sticking out from the hub, your vehicle uses wheel nuts.
The alloy wheel sits over the studs, and the nuts screw onto them.
If you see threaded holes in the hub (and no studs sticking out), your vehicle uses wheel bolts.
The bolt passes through the wheel and screws directly into the hub.
Wheel Bolt & Wheel Nut Fitment Guide
Several factors determine the correct fitment of a wheel bolt or wheel nut. Using the wrong specification can cause vibration, improper seating, or unsafe installation.
Here’s what you need to check:
Thread Size (Diameter)– This refers to the thickness of the threaded section. Common sizes are M12 and M14.
Thread Pitch-This is the distance between each thread. Common pitches are 1.25mm and 1.5mm
Seat Type -The seat is the part that contacts the wheel and secures it in place. Common seat types are 60° Taper (Cone Seat), Ball / Radius (R12, R13, R14) and Flat Seat. (Example Diagram below)
Thread Length (Wheel Bolts Only): Thread length refers to the threaded portion of a wheel bolt. If spacers are fitted, longer bolts are usually required.
Hex Size- This is the measurement across the flats of the bolt/nut head, corresponding to the size of the socket or wheel brace needed. Common sizes are 17mm, 19mm and 21mm.
60° Taper Cone Seat
- BMW and Renault models use a 60° Taper wheel bolt fitment on their OEM alloy wheels.
- Also, a very common fitment on aftermarket alloy wheels.
Radius Ball Seat
- Rounded seating surface
- Common on many OE VAG group wheels like VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda vehicles.
- Radius sizes vary (R12, R13, R14)
Flat Seat Washer
- Flat seating surface with a washer.
- Most commonly used on Peugeot and Citroen OE alloy wheels.
OE Style Porsche Bolt
- Manufacturer-specific design.
- Designed specifically for Porsche OE wheels.
- R14 Radius Seat Washer.
- A few SQ Audi models also require an R14 Radius seat.
