Wheel Bolts

Wheel Bolts or Wheel Nuts?

Some vehicles use wheel nuts, while others use wheel bolts. But what’s the difference?

Wheel bolts have an external male thread that screws into threaded holes on the vehicle’s hub, whereas wheel nuts have a threaded hole that screws onto an external stud protruding from the hub.

Whether a vehicle uses wheel nuts or wheel bolts typically depends on the manufacturer. For example, most Audi and BMW vehicles use wheel bolts, though this isn’t always the case, but don’t worry we are here to help you with that.

Wheel Bolt Fitment

Several factors determine the fitment of a wheel bolt, as outlined below:

  • Shaft Diameter: The shaft diameter refers to the thickness of the bolt shaft beneath the bolt’s seating, typically measuring M12, M14, or M16.

  • Thread Pitch: The thread pitch measures the distance between each thread, usually 1.25, 1.5, 1.75, or 2mm.

  • Seating: The seating is the shape where the bolt contacts the wheel, located under the bolt head. Common shapes include tapered, flat, or radius, with the most common tapered angle being 60 degrees and common radius sizes being R12, R13, or R14.

  • Thread Length: This refers to the length of the threaded portion of the bolt, which can vary depending on the thickness of the wheel’s mounting face or if wheel spacers are used.

  • Shaft Length: The total length of the shaft, measured from the bottom of the seating to the bolt’s end. This is usually the same as the thread length, but in some bolts, there’s a section of unthreaded shaft before the thread starts, leading to different measurements for thread and shaft length.

  • Hex Size: This is the measurement across the flats of the bolt head, corresponding to the size of socket or wheel brace needed. Common sizes are 17, 19, or 21mm.

Tuner Wheel Bolts

Also known as slimline or small diameter bolts, these are often used on aftermarket alloy wheels with narrower bolt holes. They typically require an internal drive key inserted into the bolt head, with the socket or brace used on the key head.

Variation Wheel Bolts

Sometimes called ‘wobble bolts,’ these bolts allow for the fitting of wheels with a slightly different PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter) to your vehicle. The difference allowed is up to 2mm, with the most common use being fitting 100mm PCD wheels onto 98mm PCD hubs.
